Expert Set To End Wild Gas Blaze Near Renovo Pa

Texas expert Paul Adair arrived to direct a new attempt to extinguish a gas well fire burning since Monday near Renovo Pennsylvania. He planned to place a 50 quart nitroglycerin charge to create a vacuum and shut off the gas release valve. Earlier charges failed to halt the blaze which is burning an estimated 68 million cubic feet daily.

Scientist Arrested on Spy Charge in California

FBI announces the arrest of Dr. Lindey Weinbaum, 62, a California Institute of Technology scientist formerly with its jet propulsion lab, on perjury and government fraud charges. The complaint alleges he lied about Communist Party membership before the Industrial Review Board on Sept. 23, 1940.

Holmes Safety Assn Honors CBC At Meet

Three mines of Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp were honored by the Indiana Council of the Joseph A Holmes Safety Association for outstanding safety. Mines cited include Clymer 4 Mile Clymer Commodore Mine and Dutch Run Mine, with CBC earning a council Group 2 banner. Yatesboro Mine and Commodore Mine praised for long safety records. talks on May accidents given by Northover and Bloor. Next meeting Sept 21, with a time change to the third Friday.

Population Down In 3-County Area

Preliminary census reports show the population of the three county district fell by 8 339 in the past decade. There are 366 061 people in Indiana, Cambria, and Armstrong Counties compared with 374 400 in 1940. The district census office in Johnstown will close today as six of eight employees are released. Regis A. Hoover and an administrative assistant will depart this afternoon.

Second Suspect Taken In Spy Ring Activity

Syracuse chemist Alfred Dean Slack, 44, linked to the Klaus Fuchs case, admitted supplying a secret explosive and production data to Harry Gold. Gold and Semen M. reportedly transmitted samples to the Soviet trade circle. Slack, a wartime Kingsport and Oak Ridge worker, held on 100000 dollar bail in Utica, awaiting transfer to Knoxville.

Milk Men to Meet on June 20 at High School Auditorium

Representatives of the Allied Milk Producers Cooperative, including dairy farmers from Indiana, Westmoreland, Cambria, Somerset, and Fayette Counties, will attend a special meeting on Tuesday evening June 20 at the high school auditorium. The gathering aims to form a committee to represent farmers before the Milk Control Board after a three hour meeting in Harrisburg with board members. Public relations director James Betts announced the event.

Taxi Driver Charged After Wayne Avenue Collision

Harold E. Little 1049 School Street faces two motor vehicle violations after colliding with a parked car on Wayne Avenue Indiana at 12 10 am. Damage to the Orr taxi estimated at 1000 while John Carcella of Homer City owns the other vehicle.

Swimming Class I To Start Monday

Indian Springs pool will launch swimming classes starting Monday with beginner and intermediate sessions on Monday Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 2 pm. Junior and senior life saving classes run Tuesday and Thursday 1 to 2 pm. Adult beginner class signups with William Gorman Tuesday at 6 30 pm. Pool closed Saturdays for cleaning and no general swimming until after 2 pm on class days. Evening hours extend to about 9 pm except Saturdays.

Beverage Dealers Picnic Opens Indiana County Event

The first annual picnic of the Indiana County Retail Liquor Dealers Association will be held Sunday afternoon at Dogwood Park two miles west of town on Route 422. Signs will guide attendees. About $5,000 in prizes will be awarded. A one-year-old Diamondville girl Jeanne Bracken was admitted to Indiana Hospital for leg injuries after being struck by an auto near Stafford. The picnic starts at 1 p.m. and tickets will be sold at the grounds. The girl’s father William Bracken said they were in a parked car talking to people when another vehicle struck the parked car.

Indiana Legion elects C Gilbert Walfenden Jr county commander

C Gilbert Walfenden Jr, present post commander of the Indiana American Legion, was elected county commander for 1950-61 at Blairsville. He will be installed this fall after the State convention. York Is Successful Bidder For New Plant

Indiana was eliminated as a site for the National Radiator Company expansion. York was favored for proximity to eastern markets and seaports for foreign trade. Indiana Chamber's Industrial Expansion Committee was told Indiana ran a close second and will discuss the situation in July at Johns town.

Job Placements Up Unemployment Decline In Indiana County

Indiana County shows brighter employment figures with rising placements since January. Unemployment checks fall gradually from 1186 recipients the week of March 4 to 772 the week of June 8. New compensation applications declined from 135 to 44 weekly, amid a general downward trend.

Five Die In Rural Virginia House Fire

Staunton dispatch reports a rural home fire near Staunton in Augusta County that killed five members of the Weaver family. Victims include James Weaver 33 and Charles Weaver 41, their father William 84, and Charles six children Tommy 11 Kathleen 18 Louise 17. Firefighters struggled to control a blaze at the two story frame house as a kerosene stove sparked the deadly fire.

Truman opens gates to 136000 more DPs

Washington June 16 President Truman signed inflation opening America s doors to 136 000 additional displaced persons revising the 1948 law expiring June 30 and extending the program a year. The measure raises eligibility to 341 000 and adds 5 000 war orphans 54 744 German ancestry cases and up to 15 000 prior entrants on temporary visas. It ends charges of anti Catholic and anti Jewish discrimination and adjusts farm and Baltic state quotas.
