NAACP Wins Reprieve Over 1.25 Million Fine

US District Judge Olivia Smith blocked white merchants from collecting a 1.25 million judgment against the NAACP as it appeals. She freed the group from a 1.55 million Mississippi retirement bond but required a 100 thousand bond instead, saying enforcement would cause irreparable harm during appeal. The case arose from a black boycott in Port Gibson, Claiborne County, a predominantly Black area southwest of Jackson. The injunction remains to allow exhaustions of appellate avenues.
