United Nations veto blocks South Africa arms embargo

At the United Nations, the three permanent Western members vetoed a Third World resolution to declare a binding arms embargo against South Africa to force its removal from South West Africa Namibia. The 10 to 3 vote included abstentions by Italy and Japan, with the United States opposing to protect ongoing negotiations for Namibia and Rhodesia. Economy Growth Slows In Third Quarter Report

The Commerce Department reports the US broad GNP growth slowed in the third quarter, at a 4 percent annual rate, below what is needed to reduce unemployment. President Ford notes inflation improved while housing starts rose 17.6 percent to 1.81 million, highest since February 1974, as Carter criticizes the recovery as lackluster.

Watergate prober hired for county assessment probe

Supervisors voted 41 to hire Carmine Bellino, former chief accountant to the U.S. Senate Watergate committee, to lead a nine month probe into county property assessment practices. They also hired Bail Hunt firm with Doug Dalton to represent Watson in assessment hearings. Bellino’s contract caps at 21760 dollars for Nov 1 to Mar 3 1977.

Shell finds oil south of Long Beach suited for production

Shell Oil Co announced that evaluation tests in oil bearing sand south of Long Beach suggest a zone near the San Pedro Bay area could be commercially producible. Three of seven zones were tested this year. two zones showed promising flows before tests were inconclusive due to borehole conditions.

Soviet protest after space program leader robbed in Anaheim

The Soviet Embassy and consulate-general demanded a full investigation after space chief Boris N. Petrov and his aide were robbed of $36 in the motel lobby in Anaheim during a congress of the International Astronautical Federation. The incident prompted a Soviet protest to the United States, with weather noted as cloudy morning, clearing by afternoon and temperatures from mid 50s to mid 70s.
