U S inflation slowed in September with overall consumer prices rising by the smallest amount since April. Food prices, after seasonal adjustment, showed no change. The softer rise comes as workers' real purchasing power remains pressured amid ongoing price dynamics.
The nation’s food prices held steady while the overall price index rose about 1 percent, reducing purchasing power for a second straight month. Inflation reached 6 percent in August to June, with a September uptick yielding a 4.9 percent annual rate nationally. the 1974 rate stood at 12.2 percent with 32 months of price gains totaling 5.8 percent. Carter highlighted the drop in purchasing power, noting typical weekly pay is 2 percent below Ford’s 1975 benchmarks.
Worth notes the face value dollar from 1967 now only 58.6 cents while local inflation shows housing up 1.2 percent last month. Mortgage interest, rent, transportation costs up 2 percent, clothing up 14 percent, and medical expenses up 3 percent in September lift regional prices above a year ago, with inflation around 4.3 percent.
