Faltering market closes on upside
New York stocks ended higher after a wavering morning with the Dow Jones industrials of 30 rising 4.90 to 968.86. The NYSE index gained 0.15 to 54.33 as the Standard Poor's industrial index rose to 118.80 and the SOC-stock index advanced to 101.74. Trading volume on the NYSE reached 15.85 million shares while the Nasdaq composite climbed to 89.63.
