Unions Clash Over Vote Change in Fishermen's Dispute
About 200 fishermen from AFL and ILWU pressed a stance as AFL officials moved to switch a vote from secret ballot to a voice vote. Accusations of intimidation were leveled by union critics who warned of port blockades and possible Army involvement similar to past events. Sailor leaders said intimidation and goon squads suppressed genuine membership participation, while Longshore Union President Harry Bridges pledged support for fishermen. Affected members reported dues being seized and unclear reasons given for their removal from union rolls.
