Three Long Beach ships added to mothball list
The Navy announced 22 ships to be deactivated in the first six months of next year as part of a military economy drive. Long Beach based destroyers USS Owen and USS Stephen Potter and destroyer minesweeper USS Shea are to be mothballed, reducing the active fleet to 901 by June 30. Other Long Beach vessels were previously ordered inactivated by December 31. The moves aim to keep operating forces within limits set by the Defense Department amid manpower and procurement cuts under the budget.
