Panel official defends abortion stand in Washington
In a Washington Window interview, Dr. Charles Westoff, executive director of the President's Commission on Population Growth, defended the commission's recommendations for freedom of choice on abortion and access to contraception for teenagers. He said Nixon's reaction risked credibility, and the panel aimed to maximize individual freedom while noting contraception is widely practiced. The panel urged allowing abortion decisions up to a point and making contraceptives available to unmarried youths, arguing it would curb illegitimate births and venereal disease without slowing overall progress.
