President Nixon, en route to Moscow for a summit with the Soviet leadership, maintains a patient stance toward provocations and seeks substantive agreements. He bowers routine workday in Salzburg before traveling, while Soviet pledges of friendship frame a peace-focused visit.
North Vietnamese forces spearheaded by tanks pierced Hue defenses early today driving South Vietnamese troops back nearly two miles. The fighting centered five miles northeast of My Chanh village, about 20 miles north of the former imperial capital, in a second attack on the northern defense line in two days. UPI reported U.S. and Saigon officials described heavy combat near the river and at a Marine headquarters below the river as pilots carried out widespread strikes across North Vietnam.
About 7,000 protesters gathered at the Capitol foot Sunday to oppose Nixon's Indo China policy. Police arrested 178 demonstrators in skirmishes. tear gas used on small groups. A planned Pentagon access block was not endorsed by NPAC. Dr Benjamin Spock was among expected attendees.
A Hungarian-born geologist Laszlo Toth 33 claimed to be Jesus Christ and attacked Michelangelo’s Pieta in St. Peter’s Basilica with a 12 pound sledgehammer disfiguring the Madonna and breaking her left arm. He was seized by a Vatican guard and charged with damaging artwork and offending religion. If convicted he could face up to four years in jail. The statue completed in 1500 remained in place after a protective glass panel was to be installed. Witnesses described a blue jacketed man leaping barriers shouting I am Jesus Christ and hammering at the sculpture.
In East Los Angeles Humphrey urged 18 percent Mexican American bloc to back him, promising cabinet seats and top representation. Cesar Chavez endorsed McGovern, while Eugene McCarthy backed McGovern in California's pivotal June 6 primary. Humphrey attacked rivals while touting a 20 year record and farm-worker support.
