Two deputy sheriffs were fired for gross negligence as 14 inmates walked from Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans. Seven were recaptured by Monday night. officials deem the remaining seven dangerous.
In Hartford the Connecticut House approved seven amendments and sent a bill to the Senate by a 120 to 0 vote to ban abortions except to save the mother's life. The strong antiabortion measure faced a tight Senate vote and uncertain fate.
A vast Indian heat wave left 357 dead over 16 days with 101 fatalities in Bihar and a 135 degree unofficial reading at Dhanbad. Official temps showed 115 degrees in the shade at Shanbad as authorities battle the crisis across three-fourths of the nation.
A powerful quake struck Luzon near Casiguran causing damage in downtown Manila with no injuries reported. The 6.7 magnitude event jolted the region 169 miles from Manila, prompting emergency responses and assessments.
Jane Hart wife of Senator Philip Hart of Michigan says she will stop tax payments in protest of the Vietnam War. In Kingston Oklahoma on May 20 over 35 years six of Mrs. C. D. McGarrs seven children have died on that date. Neighbors and the town funeral director confirmed the eerie pattern on Monday. The family will not disclose the names or details of the other children.
Senator Edward Kennedy and Mrs. Edward Kennedy walked slowly around the grounds of their McLean Virginia home during the annual Northwest Settlement House benefit. Mrs. Kennedy remains in a cast from a skiing accident as they attended the charity event.

Senator Strom Thurmond told Utah State University students in Logan that he opposes amnesty for those who dodged the draft or deserted from the service. He said they should be prosecuted under the law for violation of the law.
