Gas Tax Rate Hike Eyed in City Budget

City Manager Sam Vickera prepared a preliminary report on the 1952-53 budget amid discussion of raising the gas rate, possibly the tax rate or both. The gas rate, since 1931, is about 25 percent lower than nearby towns. The Gas Department has sent about 3,000,100 yearly to the city, but harbor gas supply is dwindling and next winter will require large purchases. If shortages continue, the department may use surpluses sent to the city, prompting the need for general funds elsewhere. Vickers called the budget the toughest since he arrived in Long Beach, with a third option being a sales tax.
