In Panmunjom and Tokyo rapid developments show United Nations and Communist side near agreement on most issues but split on prisoner repatriation. Reds refuse the 76,000 prisoners ready to return, prompting continued secrecy off the talks.
Gen Mark W Clark arrived in Tokyo to assume the Far East command, starting a shakeup that will move Gen Ridgway to Parkt and bring Gen Dwight D Eisenhower home to campaign. Clark pledged full effort for an honorable Korea peace and said he takes over with recognition of the responsibilities.
The Wage Stabilization Board urged union officials and industry leaders to resume work and production and to report back next Tuesday on the dispute. CIO AFL and independent unions, along with 74 oil companies, were invited to a board meeting as talks continue. Denver union leaders criticized the move as potentially breaking progress in negotiations. Interior Secretary Chapman dismissed a rationing report and said no mature agreement appears imminent. Reports nationwide offered cautious optimism for an early settlement.

Washington May 7. In Ohio Taft claimed all 56 GOP delegates as his landslide victory boosted his bid. Florida showed a tight race between Russell and Kefauver with eight lead changes and record turnout of about 800,000 votes. Russell led late in Miami area. Kefauver carried the Gold Coast as the two southern Democrats remained close.
