Bordeaux Jail Riots End After Fire and Tear Gas

About 550 rioting prisoners sparked fires and clashed with police for three hours at Bordeaux Jail in Montreal. Guards and inmates were injured. tear gas, clubs, and fire hoses subdued the mutiny as firemen fought blazes in the chapel and switchboard area. One guard and two prisoners hospitalized. hundreds of officers helped restore order.

Vogeler backs boycotts to free Oatis in Cold War push

Robert Vogeler, a former prisoner in a Hungarian red camp, urged economic boycotts and diplomatic restrictions against all satellite states and the Soviet Union to help release William Oatis. No Strike Pledged by CIO Leader

In Washington on May 4, CIO President Philip Murray said his 650,000 United Steel workers would not strike the government after breakoff in wage talks. Defense official John R. Oil Union Sets California Wage Pact With Standard Oil
