Amid ongoing battles south of the 38th parallel, United Nations and Eighth Army forces confront Red troops on the peninsula. Chinese forces advance on the battered beachhead as the fleet shells toward the coast to aid infantry and air units. A spokesman said the situation is being contained.
John Wolti, 54, was rescued alive after more than 54 hours trapped 400 feet underground in a coal mine near Hunton Washington. He suffered a crushed right arm and severe shock but was in fair condition before collapsing into a coma at Enumclaw hospital. Night fire boss Bill Moses credited a fallen beam shielding him as the rock threatened death.
Bellflower Artesia Norwalk region police rounded up 25 people including 10 juveniles and four girls on narcotics suspicions. Thirteen suspects were named and jailed. two more expected tomorrow. rest are youths. Arrests occurred on streets taverns and residences ending a month long marijuana smoking party probe. Source said supply largely flowed from Long Beach.

Reliable United Nations and Korean sources said 600 Korean political prisoners including women and children were executed in Seoul during the week. A South Korean official told United Press that 578 prisoners who had been sentenced earlier were shot by firing squads in a northern suburb last Monday.
The President announced immediate wage price controls and a call up of 3.5 million men to arms as soon as possible. He warned Russia risks general war and urged higher taxes, longer work hours, and limits on civilian goods to speed defense. National Guard divisions 31st Alabama/Mississippi and 47th Minnesota/North Dakota to active duty January 16, with training at Fort Jackson and Camp Rucker. He urged strikers to return to work and outlined home front measures to boost production, including compulsory price ceilings on defense items and voluntary controls, with rapid increases in plane, tank, radar and other outputs.
Federal talks to settle the wildcat railroad strike broke up without an agreement after President Truman urged workers to return. Union officials said no settlement emerged despite a meeting of four operating brotherhoods with the National Mediation Board.
