Reds in Hamhung Hit Beachhead

Chinese Communist troops swarmed into Hamhung and pressed at the UN beachhead around Tsungnam. American infantrymen yielded substantial ground near the port as nightlong assaults by groups of 50 to 60 were described as harassing. Engineers blew seven tunnels and six highway bridges while a new air strip was built nearby. About 15,000 refugees fled through Rail no man’s land as remnants of the 10th Corps prepared to defend behind a curved arc beyond the harbor.

Sanctions Extend to North Korea and Red China

The State Department with Treasury and Commerce froze all Red China assets in the United States and banned shipments by sea or air to China. The order also covers assets in Hawaii and Alaska and applies similar controls to North Korea. It bars loading and unloading cargo if the shipper believes it will reach China. Officials cannot estimate total funds involved. $200 million in assets are said to be in the United States for people in China and Formosa.
