Bill Altering Pot Possession Penalty Heads to Assembly
SACRAMENTO APs Legislation to ease marijuana penalties and create a drugs commission moved in the Assembly. Assemblyman W Craig Biddle Riverside would allow judges to sentence a first offense marijuana possessor to county jail up to one year instead of the 1 to 10 year state prison term. The bill aligns marijuana and dangerous drug penalties and would appoint a 30 member California Commission on Drugs and Society to study effects and propose laws. Shoemaker Lompoc introduced the commission bill noting a need for new approaches. Last year a similar measure passed the Assembly but died in the Senate Rules Committee.
