Khe Sanh Sees Stage Set For Major Battle
American and North Vietnamese troops exchange artillery and skirmishes near Khe Sanh as U S forces evacuate about 2000 civilians. U S Marines guard the demilitarized zone as B 52 bombers conduct four early raids on North Vietnam targets.
North Vietnamese attacks loom near Khe Sanh stronghold
Col David Lownds commander of the Khe Sanh garrison warned of heavier enemy assaults. His 26th Regiment reported light actions as shells and mortars drove Marines to cover at Con Thien in the McNamara Wall area. In other fronts, a Cambodian incursion note, a protest at Sasebo, and talks in Moscow with Brezhnev and Kosygin framed Vietnam War tensions. Egypt charged a failed coup attempt led by Abdul Hakim Amer, with Amer dead after arrest.

National High Court Upholds Oath for Teachers
The Supreme Court ruled states may require teachers to swear to uphold federal and state constitutions. The ruling affirms a New York law on allegiance oaths and suggests other states could adopt similar affirmations while noting royalty oaths remain unconstitutional. The court will also decide if welfare can be cut to dependent children when a mother is found with an illicit partner.

Fog slows travel and floods Texas as storms ease
Fog persisted in California and spread across the north central United States, closing airports and slowing traffic. Rain continued for a fifth day in Texas with evacuations near Lake Corpus Christi as upstream thunderstorms caused water to spill over a dam. The Nueces, Atascosa, and Frio rivers surged seven to three feet above flood state while snow flurries touched Minnesota to upper Michigan as cold air moved in.
