Heart Transplant Patient Kasperak Dies After 14 Days
Dr. Norman Shumway detailed the turning point when Kasperak bled massively from the stomach before death at Palo Alto Stanford Hospital. The 54 year old, first adult heart transplant patient in the U S, died 14 days five hours after the transplant. The operation on January 6 followed by months of post operative trials, showed the transplanted heart functioning well as a pump despite multiple complications. There was no evidence of rejection in Kasperak’s near normal body. The surgeon indicated a provisional yes to further trials depending on postmortem findings.
