Terrorism Flares Across South Vietnam In Nixon Era
Stepped up Viet Cong attacks coincide with Nixon's inauguration across South Vietnam. A daylight mortar strike hit 11 miles from Saigon and two incidents occurred in the capital. Viet Cong broadcasts urged stronger efforts to drive out Americans and proposed talks for a peace settlement. Enemy forces moved from the Mekong Delta toward the DMZ firing 200 rounds at an American recon plane which landed safely. In the delta 150 Viet Cong troops ambushed five U S Navy boats west of Saigon, sinking one vessel as a helicopter gunship was shot down.
