CSLB Senate Rejects Nontenured Faculty Election Change

The Academic Senate at California State College at Long Beach voted against submitting a proposal to the full faculty to allow nontenured junior faculty to run for Senate seats. The motion failed to reach the required two thirds. Dr. Sam Pollach urged petitioning for an all faculty ballot, saying about 40 percent of CSLB faculty are nontenured and junior staff deserve a voice. Critics argued tenure signals department acceptance and that the Senate must represent the whole college, not invite new members unfamiliar with departments. Rick Anthony from the Oct. 24 Coalition sought support for his group’s program but was not added to the agenda.
