Kenneth L. Steiger an 18 year old college student escaped unharmed after a head on crash split his 1964 sedan in half. The collision occurred on a curve of Wilmington San Pedro Road when a truck struck his car causing the split. Steiger a music major history minor at California State College Long Beach reported skid marks before the impact.
A Signal Hill military academy bus slid off a winding road near Rolling Hills and flipped onto its side Friday injuring two of 25 students. Tim Carter, 11, had a cut arm treated at San Pedro Community Hospital after the 4:18 p.m. accident at Palos Verdes Drive South and Forrestal. Mark Snowden, 12, sustained minor injuries.
A Santa Ana Municipal Court judge ruled California's abortion law unconstitutional. Judge Mast may appeal. Orange County District Attorney Cecil Hicks calls the ruling nonbinding though persuasive. A decision on pursuing further action by the state appellate court or grand jury is anticipated next week.
Two ex RTD officials Dale W. Barratt and Raymond W. Gareau pleaded no contest to criminal conflict of interest over the sale of 50 surplus RTD buses. They face sentencing January 30 and trial proceedings set for April 15 before Superior Court Judge Malcolm M. Lucas. Grand Jury testimony indicated a go-between arranged the sale to a Salt Lake City transit firm in which both men held officers, for $40,000 below value, with the June 1968 transaction.
Senator Cranston chairs a Senate subcommittee on veterans affairs as hearings in Los Angeles push for supplemental VA budget funds. Testimony from VA staff and veterans groups supports increases with Congress and the Administration expected to back more money after the committee releases its report. The final hearing is slated for January 27 in Washington.
A fire at a one story brick nursing home in Marietta Ohio injured many and possibly killed up to three. Most victims were elderly patients aged 85 to 94. Flames and smoke hampered rescue efforts as two firefighters were among those hurt. The National Guard Armory was used as a temporary morgue.
