SEC seeks broader policing role for Wall Street firms
The SEC asked Congress for expanded power to oversee brokerages and transfers of securities. The study cited a near national crisis from 1969 to 1970 and the 1969 70 stock plunge, urging authority to approve or disapprove self regulatory rules, enforce them, set transfer agent standards, and oversee depositories. It also noted ongoing review of capital requirements and planned funding for 140 specialists to bolster monitoring.

AMA protests 2.5 percent fee cap for doctors
The American Medical Association charged the Price Commission with discrimination as doctors’ fee increases are limited to 2.5 percent annually under Phase 2 controls. AMA officials met with Donald Rumsfeld at the White House and urged steering concerns to the Price Commission. The group argued standardized fee schedules are hard to apply fairly and may not curb inflation, while noting hospitals face different rules and reporting requirements.
