Combined News Services reports South Korean authorities arrested eight individuals before dawn in connection with the 22 story hotel blaze that killed 159 people. A fire expert called the structure a death trap as workers continued digging through charred wreckage for the 159th body found Monday night.
Seoul district prosecutors arrested hotel owner Kim Yong-San and four officials for carelessness and improper construction. Two ex-city officials and a fire officer were also detained for alleged inspection failures at Tae Yongah Hotel since its opening two years ago.
The three day Christmas traffic death toll rose to 645, surpassing last year and federal forecasts. Florida reported 44 deaths, California 70, Texas 44, and other states followed. the tally exceeded the 595 deaths recorded during last year’s 102 hour Thanksgiving period.
Willy Brandt arrived in Tampa with his wife Ruth and family for an overnight stop at a Gulf Coast luxury resort before a Miami summit with President Nixon. The party included a governess and security staff. A motorcade carried them to Long Boat Key for a brief Gulf Coast stop prior to departing to Key Biscayne for the meeting.

The Jerusalem Post reports that Israeli Defense Minister Dayan filed for divorce after 38 years of marriage to Truth Dayan. A hearing at the Tel Aviv Rabbinical Court was postponed due to her illness and is to resume next week. Dayan, 56, and Truth, 64, wed in 1934 when he was a farmer and she the daughter of a Jerusalem lawyer.
A Paris hospital bulletin says Maurice Chevalier is having a good day despite a serious kidney disorder. Chilean Cardinal Raul Silva says he will ship 10,000 Bibles to Communist Cuba at Premier Fidel Castro's request. At O'Hare a man was found dead in a Delta jet's nose wheel bay from a flight from Atlanta. identified as 44 year old Robert Davis, suspected death by exposure or lack of oxygen.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday for character actor Robert Lowery who died of an apparent heart attack in Hollywood while talking on the telephone to his mother early Sunday. Former Teamsters President James Hoffa returned to Detroit on Monday and was advised he is barred from any role in union management for eight years.
