Skipper Blames Gyro Malfunction In Nantucket Oil Spill
Argo Merchant ran aground off Nantucket after a faulty gyro left the ship off course by about 25 miles. Captain George Papadopoulos testified in Manhattan federal court that manual steering and the malfunctioning automatic pilot contributed to the disaster, which spilled 7.5 million gallons of oil into the North Atlantic. The hearing addressed liability with multimillion-dollar claims from fishers and cargo underwriters, while the ship’s Liberian owner contests insurance-induced liability.
