A US Agriculture Department report shows about 745,000 non welfare individuals received $109.3 million in food stamps and nearly 1.8 million eligible recipients were overpaid $105.4 million in the first half of 1976. The program costs taxpayers about $5.7 billion yearly.
About a third of 60 American and Canadian prisoners resumed eating as they await word from Mexican officials on parole legislation for drug offenders. Phillip Millard of Alameda Calif said a foreign diplomat relayed that such parole legislation may pass this week. The group at Santa Marta prison near Mexico City has pressed that promises of parole by President Echeverria’s 1970s government be honored before leaving office. Most of approximately 600 Americans in Mexican custody are jailed on drug charges.
The National Fire Protection Association reports 11,000 fire related deaths in 1975, up 200 from 1974, with injuries rising to 131,000 and total fires at 3,105,200, up 4 percent. Residential blazes caused about half of deaths. arson rose 25.5 percent to 144,100 fires and costs.
A Philadelphia Inquirer survey of eight major cities finds a 1976 drop in juvenile arrests for violent crimes such as murder rape and robbery. FBI data show overall violent crime down about 6 percent for the first half of 1976 vs 1975, though Washington bucked the trend with increases in rape assault and robbery.
