E Horton William Cockle LA L Keeney were named to organize the county corn show with Paul Carpenter acting as agent. The committee will set dates select a site and compile exhibits for a show expected to include corn and potatoes. The season has been calm and the acreage is rising as the county aims for a top farm gathering with entertaining features.
Ford Motor Company reduced prices on touring and T models, claiming the factory price marks the lowest in history. Tuesday a deal completed involving Mrs Lottie H McIntosh owner of the K Eld property at Leyland and Monmouth. Mrs. Mra Earl Klum crossed in front of a car driven by George McLinn near the post office corner. The car struck her while she carried a baby, the infant being thrown between the hood and fender with no injuries. McLinn slowed and braked but could not avoid the collision. witnesses rendered assistance, and Mrs. Klum recovered from the fright.
Miss Florence Hartman daughter of T A Hartman of Independence and W H Mode married at Dallas last Saturday and moved to Hoquiam Washington to reside. Friends here extend felicitations to the couple.
The Willamette chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting at 2 30 p m on October 256 at Red Cross headquarters 640 State Street Salem. Members with 1922 cards may vote and are urged to attend to elect a 21 member board for the coming year.
Sheriff John W. Orr confronted a moonshine case in Dallas and Falls City after an armed suspect fled a rear parking area. He seized 80 gallons of finished alcohol and 600 gallons of mash at the Thrasher property with a still described as one of Polk county’s best. Lundy’s emissary was arrested for selling liquor. Thrash er was jailed after a warrant aided the investigation.
The Polk county exhibit presented at the county fair will be displayed next at the Pacific International show in Portland Oregon, expanding regional display of local agricultural displays.
Finances were tight for the Methodist aid society before a field near the W. 8S Small ranch yielded un husked corn. Mr. Small allowed a crew to husk and store it, with Carrie Smiley hauling the corn to the barn, restoring the society’s finances. Two male members stood as possible discoverers of two red ears in the pile. Grandpa Kelley and Mr. Ingermansen present.
A car carrying Mrs. Cyrus Purvine and her son Allen veered into a ditch near the Art Baker residence in the north part of town. Mrs. Purvine suffered a few bruises while Allen was uninjured. Cream from Purvine ranch was spilled. damage limited. The accident was blamed on a steering defect. Mrs. Purvine was taken to the Graves home.
J J Handsaker of Portland spoke at a chapel hour urging Near East relief. $300 already raised and $100 more pledged by week end. Miss Taylor business trip to Portland. a Halloween party at the gym Oct 21 organized by seniors. President Landers read a letter from Miss Clara Allen detailing institute week needs. Sanders spoke to W C T U and Oregon City institute. A Curwood film The Valley of Silent Men will be shown Friday evening. Burton Bell has recovered to resume duties as student body president. Beattie spoke at Baker county institute. Senior class elected officers: Frances Lord president, Kathryn Peterson vice president, Marion Jenkins secretary, Mabel Rae Green treasurer, J O Burcham sergeant at arms, Emily Bergen song leader. Charles Moulton and Eva L Moulton of Portland were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Irvine.
Mayor Baker's caravan for the 1927 exposition drew about 60 Portland business leaders to Independence. Speeches at Main and C streets urged a $3,000,000 local funding raise. An arrest for speeding in Monmouth occurred when Kirk Thompson was halted by Marshal Stewart. fine remitted by Justice Baker after Stewart’s fee was paid by Mayor Waller. The group traveled from Dallas to McMinnville after visiting Independence.
Mayor Walker selects C. W. Irvine A. L. Thomas and R. W. Baker to form a committee to purchase and install a modern filing and record system for handling city affairs.
Willam P. Riley opens a harness shop in the Odd Fellows building on C street and moves his family from Dallas where he formerly ran the same business.
Monmouth resident Monmouth Paul Tacheron visits Gresham while Mildred McNight and Allen girls spend weekend with Albany friends. High school girls donate $60 to Near East relief after an appeal by Mr Hand saker. Rev J Farris Powell of Eugene spoke at the Christian church and will preach again next Sunday. J B Hill builds a porch and carries out other improvements. Jack Butler was ill Saturday night. Dr Butler of Independence attended him and he is much better now.
Sam Galloway of Hillsboro visited cousins P. L. and W. A. Fishback over the weekend. W J Miller and Jack Leask from Monmouth picked apples in the J B Stump orchard last week. Idaho visitors Mr. and Mrs. Coleman and daughter Mrs. Fannie Walkup from Oregon stayed with old friends Mr. and Mrs. Herman Wunder. Riddell Bros. dig potatoes. Clare Egleston from Monmouth was in town last Friday. James Dalrymple of Washington visited with Darrell Stump and family last week. John Stump harvests walnuts.
