Hops Nears Harvest as Rain Delays Work in Independence

Nearly all hops in the Independence district have been harvested. The wet season caused delays but minimal losses. C. A. McLaughlin finished picking Tuesday and EF. M. Young hopes to complete today. Young delayed picking to use McLaughlin kilns for curing. George Lewis has about a day's picking left but rain slowed progress.

Examination for Postmaster at Buena Vista

The United States Civil Service Commission announces an examination on October 23, 1920, in Independence Oregon to certify for a fourth class postmaster at Buena Vista and other vacancies. Applicants must be 21, reside in the local postal territory, and be U.S. citizens. Female entrants age 18 may apply where state law permits. Compensation was 215 last fiscal year.

Hulbert to Become Coos County Rancher

M. E. Hulbert purchases from Charles Lovell a 160 acre Lakeside farm in Coos County including house barns and outbuildings. He plans to move his family within weeks and dairying and small fruit farming, especially strawberries. The farm lies on Ten Mile lake about three miles from Lakeside. Hulbert has farm experience, recently ran an electric appliance shop, and was a former local superintendent for Mountain States Power.
