Local sportsmen begin Hina season amid pheasant hunting plans. The article notes a five bag limit within seven days with three allowed per day and mentions many local birds and anglers preparing to hunt this morning and in the coming days.
Monmouth Normal opened the week with fire training and a strong enrollment. The school endorses an upcoming concert by the Centralia college orchestra and glee club, while students sign up for commercial teachers’ courses and other year activities.
Grand Patriarch Kirkpatrick will visit Model Encampment No. 35, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Independence on October 18. Preparations are under way and members are urged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
County Clerk Floyd D. Moore warns voters that Saturday at five o clock marks the final chance to register or file candidacies for county or city offices for the November election. He urges those who moved, are unregistered, or were sworn in at the primary to recheck and complete registration. R. M. Walker remains the official Independence registrar.
J J Williams plans a Monday public sale on his North Independence farm featuring hogs horses a team of mules a cow and full machinery. Ernest Zielesch to hold Parker farm sale October 22 with stock and machinery. Sperling leases Percy Dickinson farm, Pearl Black to operate part of Drexler place. Torgenson selling near Albany heads to retirement. Enners to operate north of Saam with Peterson lease on Parker estate. Horton House sales netted about 4000 dollars last Friday incl livestock and tools. A two year old registered shorthorn bull bought at Buena Vista auction.
Rev C T Cook is at the Oregon conference of the Methodist Episcopal church opened in McMinnville this Wednesday morning. Appointments for the coming year will be announced Monday. Cook has served here two years and may not be returned, a decision left to conference dignitaries.
Independence residents flocked to the Salem state fair where exhibits set new records and attendance broke previous highs. Delegates joined the Argonne battle re‑creation as thousands watched, while auto polo, races, a horse show and other attractions kept crowds entertained with minimal incidents amid rising attendance.
A change in the Valley and Siletz train schedule became operative Monday. The train arrives in Independence at 1 45 p m and departs at 4 20 p m for Hoskins and nearby points. Service runs daily except Sunday.
Studebaker announces price cuts of 125 to 200 dollars on nearly all series with the exception of the Baby Six. Effective now f o b Detroit prices list the Special six touring four passenger roadster and two passenger roadster at 1875, big six touring at 2150, Special six coupe at 2650, and Special six sedan at 2750. The reductions are seen as a stabilizing factor for industry.
Nearly all hops in the Independence district have been harvested. The wet season caused delays but minimal losses. C. A. McLaughlin finished picking Tuesday and EF. M. Young hopes to complete today. Young delayed picking to use McLaughlin kilns for curing. George Lewis has about a day's picking left but rain slowed progress.
Employes of the Ace Garage and their wives were banqueted at the Hotel Beaver Tuesday evening by F C McLean and later entertained at the McLean home. Nineteen covers were said with guests including Mr and Mrs Walter Plant Mr and Mrs T P Oglesby Mr and Mrs A R Cook Mr and Mrs Wilbur Flood Mr and Mrs Grover Johnson Mr and Mrs Joseph Guiles Mr and Mrs Kimberling Miss Faye Johnson Fred Ventris and Charles Cox.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces an examination on October 23, 1920, in Independence Oregon to certify for a fourth class postmaster at Buena Vista and other vacancies. Applicants must be 21, reside in the local postal territory, and be U.S. citizens. Female entrants age 18 may apply where state law permits. Compensation was 215 last fiscal year.
M. E. Hulbert purchases from Charles Lovell a 160 acre Lakeside farm in Coos County including house barns and outbuildings. He plans to move his family within weeks and dairying and small fruit farming, especially strawberries. The farm lies on Ten Mile lake about three miles from Lakeside. Hulbert has farm experience, recently ran an electric appliance shop, and was a former local superintendent for Mountain States Power.
Oregon voters face a proposed market commission bill branded as cooperative marketing It creates a state office to guide farmers distributors and consumers in forming co operative marketing associations It aims to standardize markets stabilize prices provide better producer shares and reduce consumer costs by cutting out speculators and expanding farmer profits
James B. Hanna has become a groceryman in Portland according to word received here.
As an aid to the November general election Independence will select a mayor four councilmen and a recorder. No candidates have declared, with little interest shown and a nominating meeting likely within two weeks. Current terms ending include Craven Calbreath Cockle and Thomas. Mayor Walker and Recorder Swope currently hold office.
Merl W Nye and Miss Inez Mix wed in Kalama Washington on September 11 and have taken an apartment in Salem temporarily They traveled to Portland for a visit and rumors of a Washington ceremony circulated but could not be verified Inez Mix is daughter of Mr and Mrs M W Mix and sister of Tra Mix cashier at Independence National Bank Nye is an automobile mechanic and former service man The couple has many friends who wish them well
