Students Explore Salem State Institutions On Educational Trip
About 75 Oregon Normal students joined Mr. Butler for a Salem excursion Tuesday. They visited the supreme court pension governor's offices penitentiary and asylum and later called at the school for the blind and deaf among others. The day highlighted educational value with thanks to President Sanders Butler and Miss Chandler.

Mrs. Elnora Mattison dies. funeral held in Independence
Mrs. Elnora Sophia Wilson Mattison of Marion and Polk counties died November 14 after a long illness. She was born October 31, 1858 in Goral Michigan and married Charles Mattison in 1874. Surviving children are Jessie, William, Grover, and Bertha Lorence. one son Clifton died in infancy and daughter Lola Perry in 1910. Interment followed at the I O C F cemetery with Rev. Roselle officiating. pallbearers included C A McLaughlin and others. Memorials of flowers filled the funeral hall as friends gathered from Oregon and Washington communities.

Independence Merchants Urge Budget Support for County Services
The Independence Retail Merchants Association adopted a resolution urging the county court to preserve funding for the county agent 2000 state aid for the county library and the Polk County Fair and Independence corn show in the next year’s budget. George H. Wood purchased the old gymnasium on North Main Street and will remodel it into a machine shop. The 52 by 74 foot building will get a metal roof and extensive remodeling, aiming for occupancy around January 1. Previously owned by Winslow and Endicott of Salem, it had been used as a machine shop before becoming a gym.

Large prunes shipped from Oregon grower coop to markets
More than 3,000,000 pounds of prunes from the Oregon Growers' Cooperative association have been shipped to markets this season. Nearly 50 solid car shipments and many less than carload lots have moved from packing plants. Large sizes and high quality are expected to drive early movement, with Mistland prunes shown in 10-pound Christmas boxes drawing favorable comment.
