County election figures show a narrow defeat, with less than a 60 percent turnout and 456 votes in Monmouth County voting against a road levy for next year. Judge Robinson warns no road work, possible curtailments, and mandatory expenditures due to the deficit.
The GDH meeting set for next Wednesday evening at 7:80 o clock will discuss adoption of a city rite and consent to any changes. Officials note an estimate prepared for conducting government during the tour and seek public sanction on the matter.
The Independence School units awarded thirty dollars for merit tolarship during the past period. Eugene MacCarthy Ruth Wilson Naomi Hewett Robert Hitt Lee Baker are named as recipients, with grades noted as fifth and eighth.
Oregon Normal President Landers spoke Tuesday at Hillaboro institute. piano by Ty Bell and baritone Mr. Reget in the chapel. The event drew students and townspeople. Regents Starr and Miller visited. Four Dallas veterans aged 82 to 88 met with their old comrade Dr. WL Hedges to reminisce about Civil War era service in Tadiasy wars in this state. They recalled saving General Grant at Fort Dallas and reflecting on past hardships as the group shared stories and portraits before returning home.
The Art Club of the Ore Normal school presents three one act plays at 8 p.m. in the Normal chapel on Wednesday November 10. The program includes The Kleptamaniac by Margaret Cameron, Pela Timor by Copa Gala, and The Land of Heart's Desire by W B Yeats.

Report notes corn can be cultivated on low land. Four ears of late yellow corn weight 60 pounds and measure 61 inches, seen in McIntosh’s window. The corn came from the L. Hedges ranch where stalks reach about 15 feet and ears hang high needing stalks to break.
Mrs. Effie Maude Lewis of West Salem dies at 43 after a paralytic stroke. Funeral held in Falls City with relatives including husband Wilbur Lewis and sons Glenn and Marvin. She was born near Perrydale, joined churches in youth, married in 1899, and leaves a large family including Mary Miller of Salem and siblings across Washington and Oregon.
W B Huggins, previously running the Sayles Motor Car company, has changed the Dodge Brothers agency and garage name to Huggins Motor Company. The business, started by B P Sayles, was purchased by Huggins who kept the original operations and branding until now.
John B. Stump & Sons and William Riddell & Sons of Monmouth dominated the Pacific International goat show. Prizes included Grand Champion Oregon Lad 85878 for Stump, multiple Oregon Lad and Doe honors, and several top placements across bucks and does, with Riddell’s entries strong in many categories.
D. M. Brown, state motor trooper, was arrested last Saturday for cutting a corner at Flint and streets, after H. M. Carter of Salem filed the complaint. Judge R. W. Baker discharged him, Brown claiming he cut the corner to avoid an accident, a claim supported by witness Frank E. Dickson. Brown was in town with weighing jacks reviewing truck loads and left after explaining proper distribution of the law.
Floral displays filled the burial service held Tuesday afternoon for Margery Ann Mattison four day old daughter of Mr and Mrs Grover Mattison. The infant died Monday in Deaconess hospital Salem with Rev Maxey of the Christian church officiating and Funeral Director A L Keeney in charge. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery. Mrs Mattison remains in the hospital but is expected to return home early next week.
Armistice day fete planned with gala decorations across streets and stores. Major W Rose exhibits war relics while locals display trophies from the war era. parade, speeches by Judge Haris, motor races, and a supper and dance are scheduled for Monmouth Independence and Isis venues.
Susan E. Hockenbery 78 died at 752 Seventh Street Tuesday after a lingering stomach cancer. She lived in Airlie country before moving here and is survived by her husband William and four children from a former marriage. Interment was in Airlie English cemetery with Rev. W. H. Wood officiating. Funeral director Aick Keeney supervised.
Moss Walker becomes sole owner of the Hotel Beaver property after seizing Angust Sperling of Portland's one third stake. The three story brick building includes three ground floor offices and hotel space. Walker previously acquired James Hanna's share, signaling his belief in Independence's future.
Mr and Mrs W H Walker are spending a few days in Portland enjoying local sights and hospitality.
