Polk County voters prepare for a special election on a road tax referendum. The county court and Commercial Club weigh the proposal, with polls open from 8 AM to evening. Officials emphasize the tax funds road improvements and bridge repairs for the coming year.
Ellen Snyder of Pena dies in Portland after a 14 day illness. She leaves eight children including Bert Snyder George Snyder Norman Snyder and Mrs Porter. Funeral services held at Vista church with Rev Roselle officiating.
N Wing hosts Initiate XT on Wednesday night with refreshments. Installed officers include Francis Browny, Meth Arrell, Sennya Ti, Mitz Gernald, Jinna Arrell, Luella Walker.
Oregon Normal invites the American Legion of Independence to a Armistice day program in the chapel at 10 a m on November 1 9 with W T Vinton of McMinnville to speak He is a former Oregon senate president and noted lawyer A luncheon will be served by Monmouth residents The Delphians present a Japanese program November 4 at 7 30 p m in the chapel and other campus events include a Hallowe en party and a screening of Peaceful Valley on November 5
Mr and Mrs J D Stapleton hosted friends on Saturday October 24 in Highland District to form the Highland Social Club. The gathering featured pumpkins leaves and crepe paper in a welcoming home with games music and a vote to meet fortnightly through the winter. Attendees included the Seeley Alexander families Girard Brandt Morrison Stapleton Nelson Fans Schwabbauer Thelma Eva Smith Anderson Stapleton and Wright among others.
The American Legion Independence Post announces a town wide Armistice Day celebration on Friday November 6 in Monmouth and Independence. Veterans ex service men and their families will attend with a free program including a parade a Normal chapel program lunch and an evening dance with free admission for the public.
An increase of 61 school age children raises District 29 total to 494. Recorder RE E Paddock completed the enumeration of Independence and nearby areas noting all residents aged four to twenty. He lists families with many children, including two households with eight children and several with four or five, names such as Willie Dugger Ray White and Frank Arnold appear among the counts.
H Charles Dunsmore D D of Independence Oregon spoke to Sarnia Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Club praising the citys civic spirit and goodwill toward the United States and Canada. He noted Portlands size yet praised local enthusiasm and patriotism and quoted Sir Walter Scott to close.
Jesse Davis Joe Swearingen and B Fox were fined 250 each by Justice Ebank after arrest on bootlegging charges in Hood River County. The Hood River correspondent notes the trio ran a sophisticated ring that sold poisonous liquor, causing several intoxication arrests and narrowly missing fatalities. Fox is son of Jesse Fox and Davis had prior jail time in Independence.
G. F. Friesen and family from Steinbach Manitoba located in Dallas after a 14 day drive. They toured John Peters prune ranch near town but did not complete a purchase. The Canadian Ford with two front doors and one man top differs from American models. A frozen radiator caused minor trouble in Montana. The Friesen party includes son in law Mr Lowen and family and plans to settle in or near Dallas.
W. R. Maillie has purchased the fixtures of the Smith and Son cigar store and is closing out the stock. He plans to move the fixtures to a new location, with Grand Ronde mentioned as a possible destination.
Dr. C. D. Butler is having his residence reshingled, with work underway on the roof and exterior repairs planned to finish soon.
Business leaders in Independence push to transform the city into a farming linked trading center. At the Recail Merchants association meeting led by R. M. Walker, they discussed boosting ties with farmers and creating Saturday bargain days. Merchants preview genuine bargains in this issue of the Enterprise.
Gilbert F. Loy of Buena Vista, a senior in animal husbandry at Oregon Agricultural College Corvallis, is involved in Gamma Nu fraternity Four H and clubs and aims to pursue livestock farming in Polk county. The program covers breeding feeding management and marketing with hands on lab and field experiences including fairs and farm visits. Loy plans to engage in farming or extension work after graduation.
A Valley and Siletz freight train, carrying logs, broke through a Luckiamute River bridge near Hoskins on Monday. The locomotive and 19 log cars passed the span before it collapsed, taking three cars with it. two cars and the caboose remained on the far side. Crew and passengers rode in the caboose, with no injuries reported.
