Prize contest offers grand rewards in Independence

The Independence Enterprise promotes a rival prize contest with an Arlington piano a Los Angeles excursion a diamond ring a solid oak desk and a five foot ball clock as top awards. Nominations are open to any respectable woman or girl with up to 25 votes per nomination and 10 dollar gold piece for the nominator. Death Toll Rises in Independence Week of Loss

The Independence area mourns as eight deaths in a week strain the town. Mrs. Ruthia May Stapleton, 15, died May 12 in Highland after illness, with funeral at Calvary Presbyterian Church led by Dr. H Chas. Dunmore. Ruthia, a former Independence High student, was remembered for promise and kindness.

Laundry Fire At Independence Steam Laundry

Yesterday the Independence steam laundry building burned for the third time in recent weeks. The fire started in the roof from a defective flue and required moving freshly laundered linen to safety.
