Saver Lad Johnny Lones at Night With Chief Parker
King Smith a Saver lad of 31 was picked up Saturday by Chief Parker taken to Hotel Beaver where he roared for the night. He said he had been deserted by his father but investigators found he had a happy home. The boy aged small for his age proved mute but later telephone contact with his father brought a stepmother to Salem. He was befriended by local Elks committee and wore new shoes and cap after the encounter. He remained in Salem pending custody of his father while authorities consider placement in an institution.

Ruby Eloise Travis Dies at Portland Home
Ruby Elaine Travis aged 14 daughter of Mr and Mrs O B Travis died at the family home in Portland on May 14. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Independence with Dr H Charles Dunmore officiating and interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery. She had suffered infantile paralysis since age two, becoming totally helpless blind and dumb in recent years. Survivors include her parents and grandparents Mr and Mrs Fred Oberson. Several relatives from Portland Liberty Silverton attended the service.

Remains of Civil War Veteran Interred in Cemetery
The remains of Edward C. Varmeer, Civil War veteran and former Independence resident, were brought from Orting Washington and buried Sunday at Odd Fellows cemetery. Rev F S Clemo of the Methodist church conducted services at the grave. Varmeer died May 1 at age 79, survived by two sons and a daughter.

She graduated from Independence High School in 1920 and taught a year in Grants Pass before returning to college.
