Violin Virtuoso Gesner Leads Salon at Opera House

A May 7 recital at the opera house featured Mr. Gesner on violin with Mrs. Babbitt and Miss Carter. Gesner performed Scene de Ballet Elfentanz and Legende with refined technique while Carter’s dramatic readings captivated the audience. Mrs. Babbitt impressed with Faust Rhapsodie and salon pieces, earning praise as a leading pianist. The issue also notes the death of Elizabeth J. Shipley, pioneer resident of Monroe, detailing her Oregon trek, family, faith, and survivors.

Guard Bill Hayden Secured as Wall Guard at State Prison

A Polk County farmer known as Hell Roaring Bill Hayden earned a night wall guard post at the state penitentiary after a tested marksmanship display at 100 yards with a prison rifle. Hayden, a veteran of the Second Oregon, previously volunteered for a dangerous night retrieval during the Tracy and Merrill incident, and is remembered for his frontier grit and rifle skill.

Dallas Carnival Exhibits From Europe Arrive

E J Arnold received a $12 000 consignment of wild animals for the Dallas Carnival exhibition. All arrived in good shape except a South American ocelot that died of exhaustion near Pendleton. The lot includes Australian kangaroos hyenas tigers lions a black bear a monkey tapir coyotes parrots and more.

Parker Chess Battle Drawn At Parker Club Match

The Parker chess club met at 2 P.M. May 9 with D. M. Calbreath chairing. Members played in a pluralistic battle where pawns and knights advanced, kings sought safety, and bishops urged peace, ending with a draw and mutual satisfaction.

Polk county warrants payable on presentation

Call for warrants dated May 5 1903 from Dallas Oregon states all Polk county warrants endorsed presented and not paid for want of funds prior to February 1 1902 will be paid upon presentation at the treasurer office. Interest on such warrants will cease on and after the date of the notice.

Lewis and Clark Fair Women Club Delegates Named

The Women’s Lewis and Clark Club of the city has over fifty members and will send five delegates to the state convention in Portland on May 20. Inductees include Mrs. J. S. Cooper Mrs. A. J. Goodman Mrs. G. W. Kutch Mrs. J. E. Hubbard and Mrs. S. E. Owen. The club votes to admit new members through June 1 without admission fees and will study early Oregon exploration. Next meeting is set for Wednesday May 27.
