Citizens are urged to support an expanded Fourth celebration in the valley as committees proceed with preparations to deliver the best entertain ment for children and residents. Independence is seen as key to maintaining the town’s famed celebratory reputation.
A public school records a notable achievement by master Studenia. Enrollment and performance metrics are highlighted, with emphasis on educational impact and community recognition.
Seeley leads as top student with 0.2 percent rank among Independence school representatives in state wide examinations. June Seeley, tied for first, third and fifth positions among 128 applicants, with Cady Merrill close behind. Instructor C D Wie praises the school for its thoroughness and Polk County pride.
Over the past year Buena Vista saw steady property turnover and new residents. Logan Pickett Knighton Winn Murphy Becker Emmons Ariandgen join the community as John Loy buys and improves the John Simpson ranch. E N Hall becomes Becker’s. Miss M J Lee buys land. John Baldwin and T P Oglesby invest in homes and businesses. W J Steele adds ferry and land. Share Kreutz returns after once planning to leave.
J M McKigney Eastern immigration agent of the Harriman lines and W K Coman Southern Pacific passenger agent met with Independence citizens at city hall. They praised the Halfway Lines League and pledged continued support as immigrants proceed westward, noting the need for locals to welcome and assist newcomers. McKinney heads east soon after a brief Oregon Washington tour.

Mrs J R Baldwin returned to her Pendleton home Sunday after a few weeks visit. She will return here later to spend the summer with her sister Mrs J R Baldwin.
