Additions expanding washing and starching rooms at Independence laundry, manager EB A. says the new space measures 12 by 45 feet and should be ready in about three weeks. Improvements represent ongoing capital expenditures in the past two years.
A consignment of Shropshire sheep was brought to southern Oregon for distribution. Ed Ison and Nissen plan to stock up and dispose of the remaining stock as demand for medium wool grows. Nissen notes strong demand and expects to move the balance soon.
In Dallas circuit court, C. W. Irvine as trustee of Ace garage and F. C. McLeod sued Bert Hilke for about 400 dollars. After the complaint was submitted, attorney B F Swope argued the suit failed to state a cause, the judge sustained the objection, and a non suit was ordered. The plaintiffs were represented by DE Fletcher and Brown & Heper non.
Independence Sand and Gravel expands workforce with five new men this week and installs a motor elevator and crusher to boost output for the coming season. Contracts secure gravel for 50 miles of public highways including the Amity to McMinnville road. Manager M H Pengra reports six to seven contractors seek gravel daily as the local plant doubles output in the valley.
Salem pastor Rev Lee delivered two sermons to roaded audiences at the M and church. High school students held a weenie roost by the Willamette. Alfred Loy moved to St Helens in Columbia county for cow testing work. Various locals visited, traveled to Salem, or stayed home, including families of Harman, Anderson, Wells, and Nash, with brief notes on health, visits, and church activities.
In Dallas circuit court Judge Gelt directed a verdict for W R Maillie on a false pretenses charge involving a Grand Ronde billiard hall venture. Complainant Dean Schomaker claimed a $700 contract refund after Maillie sold a portion of goods to him, but the judge ruled no action existed based on the contract and witness testimony.
The Oreyron Laundry Owents association will hold a convention at The Dalles on May 12 and 13 led by E. A. Danckel. Members call themselves the Royal Birdy while wives and sweethearts are the Blue Birdas. a ball and banquet will cap the session with a special car of Californians attending. Mr Dunckel and Mrs Dunckel will travel to Portland and then to The Dalles for a Columbia river highway drive, returning the following Sunday.
H. G. Wood of Independence iron works receives a patent for a new plow subsoller suited to light soils and hardpan. He announces the plant has installed a new lathe and forge for its operations.
A plan under the Smith Hughes act calls for adding an agricultural course at Independence High School by replacing bookkeeping and typewriting. The change would not raise costs or require more teachers. The board, attending with Hopville officials and taxpayers, is considering the move amid talk of a union high school district.
Corvallis special to Enterprise reports Doc Hewett among 17 students aged 16 at Oregon Agricultural College. He graduated Independence High in 1921 and studies pharmacy. He climbed a 100 foot flagpole to lower freshmen colors and is noted as the shortest and lightest man on campus. The piece also mentions Thelma Fowler of Toledo, age 15, who joined term studies.

The Oregon state chamber of commerce ordered a statewide statistical survey of agricultural industrial mineral scenic and other resources at a Portland meeting on April 20. The effort aims to compile a descriptive booklet and update data to attract settlers and investors.
The transfer of Mrs L S Cooper's residence at Third and C streets was made last Saturday to S B Walker. The property spans a quarter block with a large residence to be remodeled with stucco removed for wood siding. Mrs Cooper and daughter Genevieve have lived in Portland since Mr Cooper's death, and remodeling will begin next week.
At the city council meeting the petition of Log Cabin street property owners to grade to subgrade and gravel with river gravel to six inches was granted. An appropriation of 50 dollars for the auto park and 50 dollars for auto camp purposes was authorized. A committee of Bohannon, Skinner and Calbreath was appointed to provide hitching racks for farmers teams. The vacant lot between First and Second streets by McIntosh's grocery on C street was deemed best for a potential project. An order to issue bonds to pave the alley from First to Second streets from B to Monmouth streets was approved. Claims were presented and adjournment was set for next month.
An eight inch drilled well with 500 gallons per minute capacity has been completed for the Independence Creamery by Sloper Bros & Cockle. The 32 foot well in gravelly soil carries a 200 gallon centrifugal pump but is said to have 500 gallon capacity. Water will serve cooling, creamery products and general use in the institution.
Independence Retail Merchants' association discussed funding a six trunk line to Airlie with a projected cost above $3000 and forming a stock company. They also reviewed a Jersey jubilee tour for Polk county on May 26 and a log scout home site with a 14 by 20 foot auto park building funded by volunteers and city and Woman's club support.
A large bulletin board was set up at the corner of Monmouth and Fourth streets by the Christian church to display church announcements. Pastor David Krafts of Eugene Bible College said the board should increase the church's visibility despite being three blocks north of the church itself.
