Salem February 25 Polk county court and state highway commission discussed replacing wooden structures with permanent concrete bridges on west side highway 1. The project aims to retain federal aid eligibility but raises concerns about local financing. Two remaining gaps between Holmes Gap and Rickreall and Monmouth to Benton county line mark the last unpaved stretch from Portland to Eugene.

Harry 8 Clodfelter Dies at Los Angeles Home
Clodfelter 44 former Independence resident and brother of Mrs. A C Moore died in Los Angeles California last Friday. Born January 28 1878 in Lucas County Iowa he is survived by his widow formerly Ella Torbet of Albany Oregon his mother Mrs C E Clodfelter three brothers Ira C Charles E and Henry A and sisters Mrs Moore and Mrs A J Spong. He spent boyhood in Independence and lived in Portland before moving to California. Mrs Moore is recovering from influenza and pneumonia.

Mrs. Fred Featherstone visited Monmouth late in the week. School closed Thursday and Friday due to pupil illness. J. H. McDonald spent the weekend at home in Salem. Social club went to Independence with Pearl Alexander and family for games and music. Attendees included Dell and Pearl Alexander, Stapleton and family, Reuf and son Cecil, Seeley, Craven, Girard, Thelma Stapleton, Marion and Ruth Merrill, McElmurry, Otis Scott, George Stapleton, Ernest Wright, Carl Morrison. Next meeting will be a hard times party at the Stapleton home with Dell Alexander as hostess. L. C. Rulifson joined the Washington birthday program at Oak Point school. Mrs. Dell Alexander visited Albany and Wellsdale. Willard Cauthorne is seriously ill in Wellsdale. L. G. C. Rulifson attended a Salem trip on business. William Peyree and family visited in Salem. Highland sewing club guests included Mrs. William Peyree and son and the group exhibited sewing before refreshments.

Death of Son Follows Soon Demise of Mother
Mershall A. Poppleton died at his Gresham Oregon home on February 25 at age 62. He is survived by a widow, one brother Herbert E. Poppleton of Gresham, and one sister Cora A. Huston of Lebanon. His mother died a few weeks earlier. The Poppletons were former Independence residents, owning a ranch south of town.

A M Reeves Prominent Lebanon Businessman Dies
A M Reeves a Lebanon business leader and brother of Tom Reeves of Independence died at his Lebanon home Friday afternoon after a brief illness from pleuro-pneumonia. Born in Yamhill county near Hopewell he lived in Oregon all his life and taught in Linn and Benton counties after Willamette University. He served as postmaster at Halsey and held leadership roles as vice president of the Lebanon National Bank and president of the Lebanon Development Company, owner of the Reeves Clark department store. He is survived by his widow a daughter Mrs Gertrude Smith and a son Ralph H Reeves.

The Southern Pacific and Independence Sand & Gravel locked horns over who should maintain the switch to the gravel plant. The Public Service Commission heard Espee ask the gravel firm to handle upkeep while the latter objected. SP noted 1921 freight of $55,000 from the gravel company. M. H. Pengra and G. C.
