Independence High School honored its twelfth graduating class in a commencement program at the Methodist church. Rev. H L officiated the invocation. Prof J B Horner of Oregon Agricultural College gave the address on Oregon. Diplomas were presented by D E Vitehor and Prof O D Byers. Ginton J. Griffin was fined $20 and costs after being found guilty of assault and battery in Jumtson BR. W. Baker's court. Ella Thorp of Monmouth testified as complainant. Griffin, a Normal school attendee, rented a house from Mrs. Thorp and allegedly forced her from the building over unpaid rent. District Attorney Helgerson led the case.

Injury Reported After Leg Break At Woods
W. F. Tice, employed by Cobbs and Mitchell, fractured his leg about a week ago while working in the woods. Initial reports misidentified him as W. H. Tice, a former resident of Independence, but the injured man was confirmed to be W. F. Tice, a young man.

Trip to Corvallis Demonstration Draws Polk Farmers

Widow Civil War veteran dies here in Independence
Mrs Amanda I McHenry widow of John Nelson McHenry died at her daughter's home in Independence Tuesday morning after a two week illness from paralysis. Born July 24 1843 in Bloomington Indiana she is survived by daughters Mrs Maude Fredericka and Mrs Margaret Quincy and sons Earl McHenry Bert McHenry plus siblings and relatives. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with Rev V S Clemo officiating and burial in Odd Fellows cemetery under A L Keeney Funeral Director.

Tax Collected On Crider Dry Goods Stock
Nearly a thousand dollars in taxes were collected by Sheriff Orr on the C. L. Crider stock of dry goods at Dallas. The stock had been sold to Portland men who sold it again to others. When moved toward Eugene, the sheriff enforced the tax levy before the stock could be moved.

Alumni returned for the semi centennial of the first graduating class as Monmouth Illinois founders were honored. President P L Campbell recalled the school’s early days and its emphasis on conduct. Oregon Agricultural College’s Dean Ressler spoke on the school’s struggles and the alumni banquet honored classes from the 1870s to 1920s with officers elected for the alumni association.

Road Grading Resumes After Pay Assurance
Contractor Trent restarts grading work south of Monmouth after assurances from the highway department on pay. Polk County court and the state highway commission reach a working financial arrangement with 40000 dollars in bonds for highway purposes and 15000 dollars from the general highway fund for bridge needs. Judge Kelly’s ruling against using market road money on state highways spurred public push to amend the law restricting road funds. A similar case to Polk’s will go to the supreme court.

City council ties park curb change. log cabin street work approved
An ordinance to require head in parking on Main and First streets was proposed by Bohannon but failed 3 to 3 on third reading. The measure aimed to curb damage by street curbs and was broadened citywide. Other ordinances funded Log Cabin street grading, graveling, and a $1562 bonds sale for alley improvements. Claims were approved and the meeting adjourned to next Wednesday.
