Haselton on Hayden ranch north of Independ has 1100 cords of wood cut and ready for hauling. About 400 cords are white fir to be transported by truck to Salem pulp mill and yards. The work is done with a dozen cutters employed currently as a new bridge crosses a slough to allow haulage to the road.

Campaign to start service men insurance drive in Pacific Northwest
Portland from June 12 to 17 hosts an intensive drive to secure veterans insurance totaling at least 60000 for ex service men in Independence. Kenneth L. Cooper of the U S veterans bureau says the effort will push toward a 2000000 goal with more than 5000000 in war risk insurance expected to be reinstated or converted during the week. Wiley G. Grant and Miss Mary Edna Burch, both popular in Independence, were married in Dallas last Thursday by Dr H Charles Duns more. The couple depart for a three week honeymoon to coast points and will live in Independence after. The bride is a 1921 Independence High School graduate and taught at Crowley this year. Grant works as a carpenter and foreman at the George Werline hop ranch.

In the Farmers State Bank lobby a year of student effort in mechanical drawing and manual training is showcased. Claude Wilson won top honors with first place in both fields, followed by Wilbur Underhill and Delos Eldridge. Other high placers include Van Ness Johnson and Joe Smiley. First prize was a library table, second a tea wagon, third a dresser, with $2.50 prizes from instructor T. K. Vannice. Judge A. R. Nichola praised the exhibits. a local taxpayer expressed cautious support for the program.

Airlie high school held its graduation Friday evening with a full house and a strong program of musical and literary numbers. State superintendent J. A. Churchill attended and spoke to graduates. Griffith Freed on Bond After Jail Release
Lawrence Griffith of Hopville, known as a chicken man, posted $500 bond and was released from county jail. A jury in Justice Baker's court convicted him last Friday of possessing intoxicating liquor in the form of corn mash. Dallas attorney E K Piasecki filed notice of appeal to the circuit court. Sheriff Orr escorted Griffith to Dallas, where bonds were submitted and accepted. Griffith runs a sizable chicken ranch.

Flag Pole Raised at Local High School
A flagpole 94 feet 6 inches high was raised on the high school grounds Wednesday by the Independence Retail Merchants' association with help from Prof. Byers and high school pupils. The project, nearly a year in preparation, involved community support and many volunteers contributing time and materials.
