Peterton Woman Found Guilty in California Fraud Case

Meelow C Peterson was convicted in Superior Court of California after earlier pleading not guilty at a preliminary hearing. Bound over without bail, she had been held in county jail and sentenced to prison after a March arrest in San Francisco related to a $1000 note alleged to misuse the name of Oakland widow Henry Farrel. Pioneer Burdened Pioneer Dies in Independence

J. B. Barton a long time Independence resident and wealthy farmer died Wednesday after brief illness. He was born November 11, 1847 in Canada and came to Oregon 24 years ago settling near this city. He leaves a wife and two children and was active in Odd Fellows K of P and Elks. Funeral services will be held at the family home with interment in the local cemetery.

Daisy B. Davenport through Marion county attorneys seeks a court order granting $1000 for her defense in the divorce action against LF Homer C. Davenport. She states a New York decree awarded alimony and counsel fees, with $3955 now due, and claims lack of funds to defend. Davenport counters that plaintiff is not Oregon resident, claiming New Jersey residence.
