Falls City Youth Injured by Cable Incident

Clarence O'Brien a Falls City boy was seriously injured last week when struck by a cable in a foggin camp near the city. He sustained a kidney laceration requiring surgery and is improving toward recovery.

Two Independence Men Jailed for Theft in Dallas Court

Ed Smith pleaded guilty to stealing clothing from Fred Sloan’s home and drew thirty days in the county jail. Joe Margert admitted taking tools from C Peck’s blacksmith shop and received a fifteen day sentence. Both men are described as from Independence and the city is glad to see them jailed.

A large crowd watched the opening day of the Ulle Cley race meet as horses from owners like Homer Rutherford Clark Belknapp Alf White R D Cooper and C Peck entered major races. Obituary of John H. Purton of Independence

John H. Purton died at his Independence home on June 14 1911. Born November 1 1847 near Cornwall Quebec he moved through Canada Michigan and Oregon earning a living in lumber farming and hop raising. He married Elizabeth Kenedy March 2 1881 and the family endured hardships en route to the Quapelle valley before settling in Independence. The funeral was held at home then cemetery with lodge and Knights of Pythias honors. He leaves a widow and two daughters Ivy and Florence and was remembered as a generous upright pioneer.

A Benton county fugitive linked to two Corvallis robberies eluded pursuit after forcing a mail carrier and posse into a buggy chase across about thirty miles. The suspect, possibly an escaped convict, was later captured and returned to prison.

Polk County School Superintendent H C Seymour reports 176 of 7l pupils passed the annual county exam, a 78.4 percent pass rate. Mary Howard of Independence district No. 2% tops with a 98 percent average. Frank Durrell follows at 95.2 percent. A Tuesday evening performance by the Presbyterian Ladies drew a full house. The comedy featured strong ensembles led by Macey Claude Johnson and Clara Johnson with Mrs Moore and Miss Tice delivering top turns. Arthur Moore directed and received gold cuff links as thanks for guiding the success.
