Ministerial Association Report Sees Strong Attendance and Talks

The Eugene District Ministerial Association held a well attended session at the M E church with Dr. Abbott elected chairman and Rev. K M Smith secretary. Many ministers spoke on Home Mission work, Greek and Hebrew biblical knowledge, church music, and international topics, marking heightened interest and fellowship in Independence.

Visitors from Eugene Help Parade Through Independence

Dozens of Eugene residents rode buses along Front Street in Independence en route to Portland for Mose Festival events. A photographer captured decorated cars and passengers as locals cheered them on. A child suffered a minor hand injury delaying the group briefly before continuing toward Portland.

Milk delivery disrupted by wind at Independence Hotel

Fred Moseman, delivering milk at the Independence Hotel, faced a gust that slammed the rear door and alarmed his old horse. The animal bolted along the usual route, bottles bounced in the wagon box, and after a frenzied dash the horse calmed at a customer gate. Aside from a few broken bottles, no damage occurred and Moseman chose not to cry over spilled milk.

Chehalis City Council Awards $57,740 Construction Contracts

The Chehalis city council awarded major contracts totaling 57,740 to Warren Construction Company. Streets to be improved include portions of Chehalis Avenue and North Street with bitulithic paving, plus 1.25 miles of East Market Street to be paved with Warrenite 8 ft width.

Dr Charles H Dunsmore departed last week for Canada to visit his old home then proceed to the Holy Land He will be away most of the summer and embarks on a journey of notable interest admired by many in the city.

Captain Penn Hosford and his wife of Portland visited Independence with Henry Patterson and family this past weekend. They stayed at Mr and Mrs D L Hedges home through Sunday before returning to Portland on Monday. Hosford praised Independence's growth during his stay.

Independence men injured in runaway accident

Two Independence men suffered severe bruises when a buggy overturned soon after midnight Saturday. Mike Kreis was found unconscious by the roadside and a younger man, unnamed, was also badly hurt. Both were taken to Krebs home and later cared for by doctors. no bones were broken but internal injuries were feared, with recovery expected.

Picnic A Success At School Event In Rickerall

The community picnic drew attendees from Rickerall and nearby towns with a full day of events. Students hosted an eighth grade graduation program in the forenoon with remarks by state and county officials and performances by the High School Green Club. In the afternoon the Artisans led activities followed by speeches from officials and musical readings. Baseball games and an evening social capped the successful gathering praised by Superintendent H C Seymour.

Model Rural School Plan Visited by County Leader

County Superintendent Seymour and Monmouth President Ackerman visited Cochran school to map a modern rural model for use as an object lesson for Monmouth Normal School students. The school near Monmouth will be led by a teacher supplied by the Normal School and supervised by Ackerman. It will showcase up to date pedagogy and rural classroom life for observer training.

Auto rental tale ends with four walkers in Salem trip

Percy Dickinson rented his car to a quartet of Independence youths who headed toward Salem to see an aeroplane start. The machine refused to move soon after, and the group left the vehicle three or four miles north of town and walked to McNary station. The boys declined to give names, suggesting readers contact Will Wood for full details.

In a muddy scene a temperance advocate was found traveling with another man and two women in the same bogged car. A loyal ally helped both loads depart while the campaign organizer pondered the results of his efforts.
