McCoy Resident Fights Freight Overcharge

James K. Sears of McCoy Oregon complains to the state railroad commission about an overcharge by the Southern Pacific for transporting twenty tons of land plaster from Portland to McCoy in March 1909. He paid $51.51 at thirteen cents per hundred pounds, though he notes the former rate from Portland to McCoy and Perrydale was eight cents and the rate to McMinnville seven cents. The McCoy agent and SP officials reportedly admitted the thirteen-cent rate was excessive but argued the car’s thirty-ton capacity justified the higher charge.
