Farmers report quality wheat in record condition after years of concern. Monmouth Milling says 90,000 bushels received with more expected. price cited near 60 pounds per bushel. Officials note a possibly short total crop but full kernels and strong valley grains, improving farmer prospects.
A Oregon auto crash near Toledo kills A F Per Schaffer 43, his son Joe 18, and another son Owen. Third occupant William Valietz dies. passenger Mar p Elkins escapes with injuries. Witness reports indicate the car left the grade, caught fire, and the driver perished amid flames. Surviving relatives include siblings in Toledo and elsewhere.
The city council of Mih fo awards a contract to a firm for mile walk construction on Monmouth streets. Work will start next Monday and cover over 26 000 feet using tinent and sand mixtures at a price of 16 cents per foot. Wab Horton of Yada prepared the bid.
Independence auto park draws praise for comfort, space, and central city location. A visitor reports Esteemed accommodations and a welcoming atmosphere created by Chief Parker and staff. Route changes from Corvallis to Albany bring more travelers via Independence and into the camp.
Dallas and Independence meet on Sunday at 2 30 PM in a high school diamond clash. Dallas has one loss this season and Independence recently handed Dallas a tough defeat. Don Barton succeeds W B Hugsrins as Independence manager and aims to boost the club’s fire to even the series with Dallas.
Thomas J. Fryer, a longtime Independence resident and Civil War veteran, wed Mrs. Martha A. South of Independence last Friday in Dallas, officiated by County Judge Aga B. Robinson. After a short honeymoon they will reside at the groom's home on a street. Friends express warm congratulations.
An advanced class in poultry husbandry from Oregon Agricultural College led by Prof. Fox stopped Monday forenoon at F. E. Hennagin and Dr. R. F. Duganne’s poultry yards. About 40 students toured as part of a two week trip with some planning to continue into Washington.
Messrs Stokes and Sykes deputy fire wardens investigated Independence conditions and objected to several items. They issued a strict injunction from Fire Chief George H Wood against burning trash or starting any fires during the extreme dry spell to guard against fires.
The Oregon Growers' Cooperative announces an extra one cent a pound to be advanced to members. A 1% cent payment was already made during picking and the upcoming disbursement will reimburse members for further picking costs.
T. W. Hart remodeled a cook house truck into a mobile grocery and moved it to the Ruch hop yard on the Marion county side of the river. He will supply hop pickers during the season.
Walter Tooze Jr of McMinnville chairs efforts by the Republican state central committee to reorganize county lines into a fighting unit. A Dallas meeting included County Chairman Br. E. Paddock state secretary C. E. Ingalls Senator I. L. Patterson and Rep Fletcher. Mrs Ora B. Cooper of Dallas named vice chairman to involve women in the drive.
Salem Jersey premiums at the state fair will reach up to 30 dollars for first awards, matching other breeds after a new board decision. The Jersey breeders had objected to earlier reductions and the board restored the former maximum. Amusements policy remains aligned with last year, excluding games of chance and other improper activities for a state exposition.
W. T. Grier of Salem has leased and taken over the Cleveland and Hedges sawmill at Pedee. He plans remodeling to resume operations and is described as an experienced sawmill man.
A group led by M. Walker S C Hanna H W Mattison J E Hubbard and C Calbreath of Independence seeks to restrain Polk County and its court from selling 40000 in bonds for the West Side Pacific Highway. They argue the June 8 1919 bonding election was illegal for failing to fix interest rate and for not specifying the exact road route within the county between the Yamhill Polk line and the Benton Polk line. Attorneys for plaintiffs are listed with Portland and Independence counsel. Polk County officials named include A B Robinson T H Graves and Floyd D Moore.
A barn and silo on the S Muhleman farm southwest of town were destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon. Four tons of hay and farm tools were lost. A horse escaped with minor injuries. Insurance coverage was about 350 dollars, far from covering the loss.
Under Salem Dokks auspices a picnic is set for Sunday August 18 at Rickreall Park inviting all Pythians and friends. W C Wood heads the local lodge and there is hope for well packed baskets. Funds exist to build two structures at the Children’s Farm near Corvallis per board president A C Schmitt after tour of Mooseheart near Chicago.
Santa Cruz director George W. Wood and R Roy Putman from Clackamas spoke at Santa Cruz City Hall on poultry issues. Wood said Oregon’s Poultry Association faces similar early challenges as California’s group which last year sold 9 million dollars in eggs with 2 million shipped to New York and charged two cents a dozen for handling.
Polk county agent Paul Carpenter warns apple growers that August worm spray is essential due to June egg-laying. He advises arsenate of lead around August 20 with a high grade spreader and suggests Bordeaux Bordeaux 44 50 for anthracnose, recommending combination with lead spray in serious cases.
Ada Burke of Dallas Oregon, a World War I veteran, died in Portland Veterans Hospital after injuries from war service. He earned note for leaping on a grenade to save comrades at Cortes training camp in 1918, later returning to duty, marrying Elone Clanfield, and operating the Harvey Dickinson ranch until days before death at 29. He left a widow, a small son, and his parents Samuel and Mrs Burke. Burke belonged to Carl B. Fenton Post American Legion of Dallas.
J R Cooper yard will be first to begin hop picking with Pearl Cooper announcing operations start Monday. Henry Ruch and Virgil De Coster to begin next two Tuesdays and Mondays respectively. About 30 acres each for Ruch and De Coster with 5000 pickers expected in Independence district. Fifty cents per box paid. tents and amenities prepared. dancing halls to be centralized in Independence. large grower says many pickers booked from Portland.
Many Buena Vista residents attended the funeral of the late Mrs Holman at the Dallas Methodist church last Friday. Rev Frank James of Dallas officiated with interment in the I O O F cemetery south of town. Pallbearers were G A Wells E E Paddock Marion Smith and Mr Mixer.
Cobbs & Mitchell will limit Valsetz plant operations to the day shift starting today. The mill, operating double shifts since spring, plans nearly 100000 in remodeling to balance the front and rear ends and upgrade the planing mill without interrupting day shift.
Dubs Mulkey of Monmouth faces Billy Gradeau of Boise Idaho in the headliner at a Salem armory smoker tonight. Mulkey is popular with fans and the Salem bout is expected to be highly interesting. Gradeau is a 150 pounder in perfect condition. Several other bouts are scheduled.
