President Taft spent the Fourth of July at his Beverly Massachusetts home with family present. The event marked a quiet Independence Day for the president away from public duties.
In Chicago on July 5 Champion Frank Gotch easily disposed of Joe Sheiker in two straight falls. Official reports note Joe Smeiker is not listed in Who's Who, but he is considered to be all right.
Fairbanks July 5 This year s Fourth of July celebration was the greatest in the camp s history. Over 2 000 people came in from the creeks and all the placer and quartz mines in the district closed down for the day.
July 3 near Fairbanks Michael Canyon a miner is in precarious condition after a slab of frozen muck fell on him in the Connalt workings. Nearby at Steele crees Sam Samuelson an oldtimer died in a shaft after being overcome by gas while inspecting an old shaft.
Washington July 6 Abram Ner director of the and now an assistant secretary of the treasury will tender his resignation. If the President accepts it is believed Andrew will come out with a stinutogy eviti McVeagh resignation. Secretary McVeagh says trouble with Andrew is that he will not obey orders.
The boxes belonging to Malcolm McDonald attacked by Tommy Seward were released during the week and the case settled out of court. Tommy received 66 dollars in cash and Malcolm paid the costs.
Flat City eateries including the Stanley Grand Rathskeller and the Dell served prime Fourth of July fare drawing large crowds and strong profits for local diners and vendors.
George Clary, while working on Discovery, was struck by a cale last Wednesday and suffered a fractured leg and a sprained knee though the injuries are not serious. Fresh arrivals and local business notes follow, with updates on ground work and consignment of Roger's Chocolates from Victoria. From Chihuahua, Mexican news reports federal forces in the city and rebels retreating northward while heat waves claim three lives.
Empire Commercial Co announces a go out of business sale with prices at cost or below. Items include rye from 10.50 to 14.50 per case or bottle, Italian Swiss Claret at 81.25, fine Old Sherry, Port and Claret, cigars below cost, Olympia Rainier Beer and 1911 brands, barrel prices at 18 and 21.50 per case, Bartlett water and ginger ale, Milo cigarettes, plus Wisconsin cream cheese and pickles. All other goods priced proportionally.
In Las Vegas on July 4, Jack Johnson defeated Jim Flynn to retain the world heavyweight title after Flynn was stopped in the ninth round by police intervention and referee decision. Johnson heads to Chicago with a 31000 payday, while a historical summary notes other victories by Johnson in Sydney, San Francisco, and Reno.
In Vernon California Ad Wolgast defeats Joe Rivers for the lightweight world title in a brutal eleven round plus bout. Referee Welch's decision draws fierce criticism as Rivers supporters dispute the ruling and medical reports reveal postfight injuries.
July 5 In Valdez and Fairbanks reports claim Delegate James Wickersham climbs in support. George E Baldwin led a large Eagle Hall rally denouncing opponents as tools of corporations. A broad petition urges withdrawal of William A Gilmore as support polls show Wickersham solidifying in the Third Division. Dan Sutherland campaigns actively in Fairbanks using local papers.
Fairbanks reports two mills arrived in the past week. One will be installed at the Tolovana Mining Company's Chatham creek property and the other is intended for the Hudson property on Ester creek.
The Fourth of July at Flat attracted many visitors from Iditarod and Flat Otter Creek residents. The day featured a 6 to 3 ball game won by the visitors, a prize list from races and contests, a notable aeroplane exhibition with broken rubber bands, a large crowd at the dance, ice cream sales by Mrs Kotseh, and an array of day-long activities led by Marshal Tom Howell and judges J Ronan and C T Suter.
Baltimore dispatch reports Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey nominated for the Presidency on the fortieth ballot after rivals Foss and Underwood withdraw. Final tally shows Wilson with a commanding lead, Clark and others conceding. Theodore Roosevelt offered no comment. Marshall of Indiana chosen for Vice President.
Theodore Roosevelt will speak to farmers Oyster Bay and in many states on economic and social issues affecting agriculture. Governors and senators discuss party alignment and campaign financing as the Roosevelt movement expands across the country.
Washington July 5 Senator Lorimer of Illinois will speak in his own defense tomorrow. The case concerns his conduct and political issues surrounding his senatorial tenure.
Fairbanks July 5 The May Roberts stock company arrived this week for ten performances in Fairbanks They are a capable group of actors and may extend their stay beyond ten days if interest warrants
Fairbanks reports incoming candidates from Dawson this week. Democratic delegate hopeful Robert W Jennings and Kazis Kratieztinas, endorsed by Socialists, are expected. Charles Herron and Tom Marquam likely arrive on the same boat.
In Fairbanks on July 5 a severe heat wave pummels the district with many suffering acutely. Dr S Hall Young spoke in shirtsleeves as the congregation gathered coatless amid the intense heat.
The Keystone drills on Otter Creek were closed Thursday as Yukon Gold Company completed its investigations. It is unclear if options will be exercised and O B Perry, manager of Yukon Gold, may arrive from Dawson soon and stay several months.
A Fourt hn birthday celebration at Mrs J A Peterson's residence included Mr and Mrs J H Smith Mr and Mrs Henry A Weir Mr and Mrs T J Thurston Mr and Mrs W H Judge A E Maltby and Miss Maltby. Bridge rounds ended at 1 a m with prizes won by Mr and Miss Maltby and booby prizes to Mrs Weir and Mr J H Smith. A fine supper followed.
