The South East Chicago Commission will elect a new Board of Directors at its fifth annual meeting on Tuesday June 11 at Mandel Hall. The nominating committee proposes a slate for terms expiring in May 1960 and May 1959 with additional nominations possible via petition under SECC rules.
Chicago's oldest outdoor fair on 57th Street between Kenwood and Kimbark runs noon to dusk June 8 and 9. Local artists and craftsmen exhibit work in progress across media including painting sculpture ceramics glass jewelry and textiles with personal appearances by named artists such as Gertrude Abercrombie Rainey Bennett Lydia Fu Eve Garrison Atsushi Kikuchi and Egon Weiner. Miss Ann Overton serves as general chairman with Mrs Mary Louise Weiner as secretary and Miss Peggy Daupin as treasurer.
Merchants aid the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference benefit showing Mr Hulot’s Holiday winner of the International Film Critics prize. The Harper Theater will host three showings at 4 7 15 and 9 15 PM with door prizes from local businesses such as Mitzie’s Flower Shops Connor's Hardware Windermere Hotel Kim Rexal Pharmacy and many more. Mrs Alex Morin directs door prize collection and co chairs are Mrs Edwin Munger and Miss Roberta MacGowan.
The Hyde Park Kenwood community backs a $50 million bond program for new elementary and high schools, building sites, and a teachers college. A June 1 motorcade will mobilize students, parents, and teachers to urge a yes vote.
Judge Daniel Roberts of Circuit Court dismissed the South West Hyde Park residents case against the redevelopment corporation finding no grounds for general equity jurisdiction. A prior administrative review portion was also dismissed for procedural reasons. The residents appealed to the Illinois Supreme Court on May 8 amid challenges to the plan for four blocks of demolition to provide married student housing for the University of Chicago.
Suits have been filed and hearings will be held through the remainder of this month and next on cases involving slum buildings inspected by the city task force.
