Mrs Atkins Reflects on Family Legislation Heritage in Springfield
Betty Atkins of Hyde Park recalls family ties to Illinois lawmaking as she served as adult adviser to Hyde Park YMCA youth delegates. Her father Benjamin Donegan, born in Lincoln, broke racial barriers as the first Negro page in Illinois General Assembly around 1900 during Governor Altgeld's term. Now 85, Donegan is retired, while Atkins works as a Cook County public aid supervisor and leads local youth groups and PTA efforts.

O Hara cites cost overruns in Fifth Army move to Fort Sheridan
Rep O Hara accuses the Army of deception over efficiency claims as the Fifth Army Headquarters shifts from Hyde Park to Fort Sheridan. He warned three years ago the move would cost at least 10 million dollars and now cites 20 million expected total while Hyde Park building sits idle. The 1969 Military Construction Authorization added 5 million to nearly 2 million prior, with GSA uncertain on Hyde Park property fate though interest from Woodlawn Hospital exists.
