A Friday afternoon blaze destroyed the Yellow Cab garage at 54th and Lake Park, with over 50 cabs and the building lost in about an hour. The Hyde Park Theater nearby suffered light damage as gusty winds fed the fire. Photo by Eric Anderson.
The Park Sculpture Committee aims to raise about 150 gifts of 100 dollars each to fund three prize sculptures for new neighborhood parks. Prize winners from an Art Institute student contest include Yvonne Hobbs Gary Wojcik and Jerome Skuba. Donors may memorialize contributors at the sites.
James W. Clement resigns from the Chicago board of education effective May 11 citing conflict with School Supt. Benjamin C. Willis and the time burden. He accuses Willis of dictatorial methods and opposition to integration, and says he must devote time to family and law practice. Willis plans to resign in December.
Brotherhood Week featured songs in French German Italian Hebrew and more plus Negro spiritual Irish ballad and other nation songs. A dramatic account highlighted contributions of many countries and ethnic groups to America with dances. In photos Patty Roberts wears a Japanese kimono Ricky Rodriguez in Mexican costume with Jeffrey Major and Bruce Ervin perform a Polish polka.
The annual wreath throwing to honor Clarence Darrow will take place Sunday March 13 at noon at the Clarence Darrow Bridge in Jackson Park near the Museum of Science and Industry. Arthur Weinberg will cast a wreath into the lagoon where Darrow's ashes were scattered, with Abner Mikva Leon Despres Herbert Kraus Jay Miller and Barratt O Hara among participants.
Rumors swirl that Timuel D. Black Jr. will run for the new 24th district seat and Richard Newhouse announces his candidacy. Black cites lack of organized support while Newhouse attacks incumbent Nathan Kinnally as a weak representative. The district spans parts of wards 4, 5, 7 and 20 and is roughly 70 percent African American. Black, a Hyde Park High School social science teacher, has past political ties including an aldermanic bid and a prior endorsement from the Independent Voters of Illinois. Daniel Moynihan will speak on The Negro Family at the Oriental Institute, part of a Chicago urban studies series.
