Picnic Rally at The Point Led by Davy Crockett on June 29

Southeast Chicago residents plan a 5 pm picnic at The Point near new Army radar sites to air parkland concerns. Davy Crockett will headline a 7 pm program with Rep. O’Hara, Ald. Despres, Col. Larner, Lt. Col. Stano, and Jessie Owens among speakers. The event aims to oppose encroachment on recreation areas and oversee land leasing to the Army.

Hyde Park Resident Mrs Allen Joins School Board

Mrs. John B. Allen of 1357 E 56th replaces Mrs. Clifton Utley on the Chicago Board of Education for five years without pay. A longtime public school volunteer and Bryn Mawr graduate, she aims to strengthen ties with social agencies to aid maladjusted children and keep legislators informed on beneficial school measures.

U C RAID Stabber, 18, Gets 1 Year

Bey, 18, of 5475 Drexel, convicted of stabbing a University of Chicago student during a Delta Upsilon house riot on April 29. He faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon and larceny, sentenced to one year in the House of Correction. Lloyd, 20, U C student, was stabbed and had his watch stolen.

Crime drop noted in 6th Police District in 1955

Don T. Blackiston of the South East Chicago commission reports 20.4 percent fewer crimes in January through May 1955 versus 1954. City-wide crime declined 13.2 percent. Hyde Park investigations yielded notable drops in robberies and purse snatchings. officers John Norris Thomas Mallon and Walter Ward praised for deterring and apprehending auto accessory and property thieves. Their work, though unglamorous, contributed to a 51.3 percent reduction in these offenses in five months 1955 versus 1954.

Sign Ordered Removed From 49th and Chicago Beach Drive

Building commissioner Richard Symkal ordered the General Outdoor Advertising Co to remove a 29 by 13 foot sign selling parcels by the Oliver B. Turner Co from a zone restricted to 12 square feet. The order follows a request from the Hyde Park Kenwood Community conference and sets a June 25 deadline.

Play Centers Open At 3 Area Schools

Three neighborhood schools will open summer play centers under the Social Center program. Registration begins Monday June 27 at Ray Kozminski and Shakespeare campuses with activities daily 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through August 19 for elementary and teen participants.
