Hyde Park School Board backs constructing three new elementary schools with sites at 50th Drexel 42nd Cottage and 50th Kenwood. CHA to sell land at Drexel List while Shakespeare Kosminski and Oakenwald face overcrowding relief needs. June 25 Park Meeting Seeks View Of Point Site

Sponsors of the south side ward groups of the Independent Voters of Illinois invite residents to a 5 p.m. bring-your-own picnic and 7 p.m. meeting on the Point site of a new Nike radar installation. Representative Barratt O'Hara will fly from Washington to lead the speakers panel and press for off-shore fill to spare scarce recreational space. The event aims to address military encroachment on south side parks and may touch on the 23rd street convention site and park conditions.

Fifth Ward Office Extends Hours Thursday Evenings

The Fifth Ward aldermanic office at 1463 55th Street will open Thursday evenings starting June 23 to align with local shopping hours. Alderman Despres says the change aims to maximize community benefit, while daily hours remain 9 to 5 and Saturdays 10 to 12. Mrs. Erikson is the office director.

Robbers of Watsons Receive Sentences

Three men linked to the April 13 armed robbery of Watsons jewelry store were indicted and sentenced by Judge Dempsey. Gerald Smith aged 23 and Lawrence Northrup aged 25 received 1 to 10 year terms. Eugen French 25 drew 2 to 10 years. Police tied the trio to other thefts including Model Camera and Tanenbaum Pharmacy raids. in Frenchs apartment investigators recovered jewelry including 33 wedding rings and two watches.

Teens Convicted in Delta Upsilon Fraternity Raid Case

Five teens were convicted of unlawful assembly for a brawl at a University of Chicago fraternity dance on April 29. Sentences ranged from fines and probation to a brief jail term. a sixth defendant awaits trial for assault with intent to kill as charges against another youth were dropped.
