Esbyterian Anniversary Organizes Silver Celebration

People celebrate the silver anniversary of the organization with a special service and heritage event. The clergy and congregation mark the milestone with hymns, reflections, and community outreach.

First Presbyterian Church of Was Organized in 1880

The First Presbyterian Church of Was organized on August 29 1880 with ten members. Rev W S Peterson a home missionary organized the effort, and Rev M E Chapin preached the initial sermon. The church received pastoral leadership from Rev J Peterson after one year and Rev J B arrived for two years as home missionary.

Historic First Church Sees Growth and Change

The church began construction in 1881 with dedication on July 30 1882 and two later additions. Pastors include Pomroy McCaslill McGogney Marshall Vander Las and Anderson. only Marshall is deceased. Since organization 869 members joined 401 by profession and 408 by letter. only Mrs Carter and Mrs C E Barrows remain from original members.

Bargain Store Closes for Jewish Holidays

The Huron Bargain store will be closed all day Saturday September 30 for Jewish New Year and again on Monday October 9 for Yom Kippur. Proprietor Mr Bordy with his wife and two children left for Omaha and Chicago to be away about ten days and plans to buy a large line of goods for better bargains upon return.

Demet News argues Huron should build a larger hotel to capitalize on the state fair now a permanent fixture. Wreck on Northwestern Line Wrecks Two Engines Fireman Scalded

A double header freight wreck on the Northwestern line near Verdi last Friday left two locomotives demolished and fireman George Bruer severely scalded. Bruer, new to the division, was taken to Rochester hospital where doctors reported little hope for his recovery. The crash occurred after a signaling mix up as the leading locomotive returned to flag a passenger and collided with the freight at Verdi.
